The European Special Interest Group is off the ground and running. The OpenADR standard is poised to expand with direction from this burgeoning working group and those who continue to fill its leadership roles. We are proud to announce the Co-Chair positions of this group have been filled by Abhishek Bahl from AutoGrid and Bernd Kosh from Fujitsu. Abhishek and Bernd are looking forward to working with the OpenADR Membership in Europe and elsewhere. Please give them a warm welcome in their new roles.

Overwhelmingly, existing OpenADR Alliance membership and those interested in OpenADR crave to learn about pending, existing, and ongoing OpenADR projects throughout the globe. To best capture and study big data in automated demand response, we need your project details. Thank you to those who are sharing your data. We aim to populate the OpenADR project map steadily and interactively. Here is a document with empty fields waiting to be filled out and expanded by you. QualityLogic has come out with a new workshop to “help inform utility DR program managers, designers, and implementers about how to best use OpenADR-based systems for automating DR.”
A video to note: PG&E not only educates about demand response, but also paints a picture of life without demand response.

Security certificates: Easier access to digital certificates for small scale trial and demo deployments
The OpenADR Alliance’ mission is to foster the adoption of OpenADR in the market. The Alliance spent significant time and effort creating the most secure and standards compliant approach to cyber security that is possible and reasonable. It is very well understood that vendors are facing a variety of challenges when bringing their OpenADR products to market. Therefore, as a service to OpenADR Alliance member companies, the Alliance has created a program to lower the entry barrier for small scale trial, demo, or short-term deployments using the OpenADR 2.0 technology.

Thank you, again, to all those who attended the OpenADR Alliance Member Meeting last week! It was a great venue to connect the faces to the names of the remote correspondence we have on a day to day basis. Our expert speakers informed attendees on how the OpenADR standard is strengthening the electrical grid through improved energy efficiency and reliability. In the middle of European Sustainable Energy Week (#EUSEW2014), the Alliance had a strong European Special Interest Group (EUSIG) Kickoff meeting. The OpenADR standard is poised to expand with direction from this burgeoning working group.

Intelligent Energy Today gave a good rundown of accomplishments by Comverge earlier this month. Universal Devices, an industry leader in energy management and automation devices, announced general availability of its enhanced weather reporting and forecast module. EnerNOC, received the 2014 Smart Grid Product of the Year from Smart-Grid.TMCNET.com. AutoGrid Systems Set the World Record for Big Data and the Grid: Over 1 Million Power Forecasts Every Ten Minutes.

Technical Update
At last week's member test event 10 companies collaborated to connect their products successfully and participants gained valuable hands-on experience. These tests are designed to refine the OpenADR standard further and increase its ability to lower the cost, improve the reliability, and accelerate the speed of Automated Demand Response (AutoDR) implementations.

Summer is almost upon us again and automated demand response is becoming more of an all seasons approach to energy and economic savings. For commercial, industrial and residential properties, Enerliance recently shared demand response is “good for people, businesses, and the environment, and will unlock a future that relies on intelligent, resilient, and clean energy solutions.”
Given the need to communicate the clear benefits of automated demand response, it is fitting that CPS Energy was awarded a “Griddie” for Excellence in Communications by the Association for Demand Response and Smart Grid. Another award winning member to note is Comverge, which earned Smart Grid Product of the Year via TMCnet.

The Implementation Working Group (IWG) is looking for your input! If you are involved in the creation or definition of DR programs please join us at the IWG to help define the standardized OpenADR DR Programs. This effort will help DR program operators and vendors to make the right decisions for their services and products and will lower the barrier to enter the DR market for all.

The timing has never been better for this dynamic open standard to take off. This Earth Month, our sponsor, IPKeys and member, Candi Controls, announced a partnership to bring “Smart Grid Benefits to the Internet of Things.” By reducing energy consumption and costs, these OpenADR Alliance members are achieving environmental facing goals in a meaningful way.
Honeywell And CPS Energy recently announced efforts to help make the electrical grid smarter and more reliable. The two-year program is expected to be the largest ADR deployment by a municipal utility, and will build on a successful pilot project that CPS Energy and Honeywell completed last year.

Technical Update
OpenADR 2.0 Enters the SGIP Catalog of Standards
The OpenADR 2.0 'a' and 'b' Profile Specifications were approved by the members of SGIP to enter the Catalog of Standards (CoS). The CoS is a compendium of standards, practices, guidelines and other technical documents considered relevant for the development and deployment of a robust and interoperable Smart Grid. Many in the energy industry refer to standards in the CoS for implementation because of the rigorous, multi-part review performed by industry experts in the SGIP process.
